Memoir of a Peacetime Soldier

What began as documentation of my time in the U.S. Army for posterity intended for my children and theirs turned into a military memoir during peacetime. The stories just kept coming to my head, some bad but many good and also funny. So, this project turned into a book. The book lead to this website and now I’m pleased to share those stories and photos with you.

This military memoir during peacetime begins in my adolescent years attending a technical school studying drafting & design. I knew this wasn’t for me. Most of my friends were falling deeper into the drug scene and seemed little worried about what was coming at graduation. I went to an Army recruiter who told me I could use my drafting skills in the artillery which upon graduation took me to Oklahoma for basic and advanced training where I learned to calculate firing data for artillery pieces.

So the story begins. Follow my life from being a young punk in High School, making the decision to enlist in the U.S. Army. Following training my undisciplined antics continued at my first duty station Fort Knox Kentucky. However, upon arrival to Korea I had the shit scared out of me on the DMZ when assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division. This was followed by change of station to the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood Texas and a supervisory position. My final assignment was to Baumholder Germany with Range Control Liaison Division then back to an artillery battalion in Strassburg defending the Fulda gap at the peak of the Cold War.

Sincerely,

B.T. Smith
